For the standing high jump (£4 and £1) there were four entries— Moore, Slattery, Shea, and O'Brien—and the betting was in favour of Slattery; but Moore succeeded in. winning at 49| inches, Shea obtaining second prize, clearing 48£ iacbes. Throwing the stone, Irish stylo; entrance, 2s 6d ; £3 and £l. Rourke ~ 1 Walsh ... 2 Fur the running flat jump there were four entries; entrance, 2s 6d; £3 and £l. The New Tear was ushered in with more than the usual amount of ceremony. Previous to midnight a great portion of the available g-uus, music, and kerosene tins were gathered, so as to make the occasion as pretentious as possible. A large number were congregated in the town to welcome in the year of 1872, and in fact the occasion passed off with all the solemnity aud eclafi possible. The sports were resumed on Tuesday, the following report of which we take from the local paper. Vaulting with the Pole. First priz6, £6 ; second prize, £l. Mason (9ft) 1 Robinson (9ft) 1 There were four entries, but on Tuesday the contest lay between the abova two and Greordie Holmes, who was the favorite. Some splendid vaulting was exhibited between these 1 three, such as we have not seen equalled on the coast before. Inch after inch the bar was raised and successfuly got over, through with some difficulty owing to the bad nature I of the ground, after Bft lOin. At 9ft. I however, Greordie found the young I blood too much for him and had to I succumb, leaving Mason and Robinson I to divide as they did at Westport. 300 Yards, Flat Race-. First prize, I £4 ; second prize, £l. Mason ... ... ... 1 M. Browne 2 Moore and Sheedy also started, Moore running himself clean out in the first 150 yards. Mason made a good win the more ereditable after his great exertion in the foregoing event. Browne was not iu form, owing to a severe strain received iu the 150 yards event on Saturday. Running High Jump, First prize, j £5 ; second prize,£l. Curtayne (sft Sin) ... 1 Shanahan (sft 4in) ... 2 Tagney and Moore also entered. The jumping of Curtayne and Shanahan was really splendid, and unequalled, we believe, in New Zealand. Running Hap, Step and Jump. First prize, £4: second prize, £1 Tangney (40ft 2in) ... 1 Mason (38ft 4in) ... 2 Moore and Shauahan also entered. After the event, Tangney, to show whathe could do, went 42ft." Hehir ... ~.. 1 Natrass ... ... 2 The result was rather unexpected, the final bout being looked for between Natrasß and Holmes. HIBERNIAN SOCIETY'S ANNIVERSARY. The Charleston Branch of the above society commemorated the above on New Year's Day by a hall and banquet. Li the evening a procession, numbering about eighty, headed by a band of music, paraded the streets, wearing the regalia of the order. But for the unfavourable weather, a considerable number of brethren from the sister lodges at Brighton and Addison's would have attended. The ball was held at the Casino do Vonise. At two o'clock the company, numbering about 150, adjourned to Weitzoll's Hotel, where the tables were set for supper. The decorations of the tables and general get-up of the banquet elicited very warm approval from the

Managing Committed; and were highly 5 -editable to the liberality and taste'ulness of the caterer. Before retiring ;o the ball-room tho following toasta : —" Hie Holiness Pope ?ius "1X.," by the Chairman; "Our Native Land," by the President of the

Brighton Branch, responded to by Bro. Dempsey; "The Australian Catholic Hibernian Society," by Bro. Keenap, responded to by the Chairman. Various other toasts were proposed, and duly responded to, and the company adjourned to the Casino de Venise. Dancing was continued until 7 a.m., when the company dispersed, after exchanging congratulations upon the highly successful manner in which the festival had been commemorated.
