CHARLESTON.
(from oub. own correspondent.) Wednesday and Thursday were the second and third days of our annual races. The weather on both days was fine. On Wednesday was a good attendance, but no betting, and very little sporting excitement. The booths did a good business. Cn Thursday. the sport was indifferent, and a wearisome delay occurred in gettiug off the first event, it being fully half-past three before a start was effected.; Appended is the'result: of the various events:— SECOND DAY. Publican's Purse ; a handicap of 15 sovs. Spuds ... ... ... 1 Maori 2 Task ...- , ; ... ,:-.:.. 3, The race should have been a gift to Task, but the horse bolted, and Spuds won easily. Charleston Handicap, of 100 sovs. About three miles. Why Not ... ... 1 XXX ... 2 This was a good race for two miles,, but at that distance it was evident that XXX was beaten, and Why Not won easily. Handicap Hurdle Race of. 30 sovs. About three miles. Sailor ... ... ... 1 There were four entries for this event, but Sailor was the only horse that could take a hurdle, and quently had a walk over. Ladies' Handicap, of 15 sovs; heats. Gentleman riders. Task (Simpson)... ..." 1 XXX (Jones) ... .- ; 2 Jenny "(Watson) • : After a good race between Task and XXX, the deciding heat was won bv Task beating XXX by a length and half. Consolation Stakes, of 15 sovs. Maori ... ... 0 ... 1 Gertrude. .... ..*. 2 This would have been a good race between Maori and Gertrude, but for the latter running inside the post. She turned, but was unable to overhaul Maori, who won by three lengths. THIRD DAT. The Booth-holders' Purse of 15 sovs. was the first event announced, but waß withdrawn, in consequence of their being no entries. Free Handicap, of 30 sovs. Task 1 ■ Why Not ... : ... 2 This promised to be the best contested race of the meeting, but the rider of Why Not was thrown, and Task walked over. ''-..'■•.. • Stewards' Purse of 20 sovs; heats. Why Not - ... ... I Task _ ... '. 2 XXX ... 0 The above was the result of both heats. - Hack of 15 sovs. Flatcatcher . ... ... 1 Kettledrum ... ... 2 For this event there were eight entries. Some amusement arose out of a false start, when nearly all the horses got away,. and made a good race home, the. starter and judge making their appearance in time to see the fiuish. A second start was afterwards made, with the above result.
