WESTPORT CHRISTMAS SPORTS
The Westport Christmaa sports were held, as announced, at Gibsoo's paddock on Tuesday. The weather, which had been all that was wretched and dispiriting during the previous day, cleared up towards evening, and Boxing Day in that respect left nothing to be desired. The day was bright and warm, while the copious showers of Monday served to cool the atmosphere and Lay the dust. The sports were anuounced to take place iit noon, but it was fully one o'clock before the entries for the first event had been completed. The concourse of people was larger than was anticipated, and the various feats excited as keen a competition as if the prizes to be awarded had equalled those of previous years. From four to five hundred persons were present at the sports. A rather amusing incident arose out of the wrestling, in which a miner from Q-iles was the principal actor. He came forward and ventured the observation that they had collected together for enjoyment, an affirmation which was too self-evident to admit of contradiction, and proceeded to remark that prior to Judge Ward (who happened to be among the spectators), leaving the district he should like to have h bout with him. The proposal was greeted with hearty laughter, in which his Honour took part as cordially as any one present.
