REEFTON.
(from our own correspondent). Things are progressing rapidly, the population ia increasing and all mining interests are advancing in value. Whenever a claim gets the reef in an unexpected direction the ground is immediately pegged out for a mile or two. Last week No. 2 South, Smith's line struck the reef in their tunnel 230 feet from the mouth, and at a depth of 160 feet so that they have an immense depth of gold bearing quartz proved. The share sold in this claim at Charleston recently, was purchased for Mr John Clarke, of Westporfc, and would now bring readily £2OO to £3OO. It is reported that several Greymouth men., Messrs Levy, G-lenn Bros., Kennedy, and A. White being of the number, are about to erect machinery on Smith's prospecting claim. Rich stone struck at a lower level in the prospecting claim Shiels's, resulted in the transfer of a l-12th share to Mace for £1075. Two prospecting areas have been applied for this week—one at the head of Murray Creek, the other west of Smith's line. The business people have given £4O towards sports on Boxing Day.
