The following figures show the population of New Zealand as ascertained by census taken for the night of the 27th of February, 1871, exclusive of the aboriginal natives, and the military and their families : Males 150,356 Females 106,037 Total 256,393 The population of the various provinces was— Auckland 62,335 Otago (without Southland 60,722 Southland 8,769 Canterbury 46,801 Nelson 22,501 "Westland 15,357 Marlborough 5,235 Wellington 24,001 Hawke's Bay 6,059 Taranaki 4,480 Chatham Islands ... 133
