CHARLESTON.

(from our own correspondent.) In the .Resident Magistrate's Court, on Tuesday a man named Frederick Heffer was charged with violently assaulting ltobert Gilmer. It appeared that defendant had been stopping for some time at the Melbourne Hotel, when his eccentric conduct had attracted the attention of Mr Gilmer, who toid him if he did not conduct himself properly he would have to leave the house. Defendant promised to do so, but was evidently determined to be revenged on Mr Gilmer, as upon his making his appearance in the bar on Tuesday morning, Heffer, who was in an excited state at the time, committed the assault complained of. Prisoner pleaded guilty to the assault under aggravating circumstances, and made a rambling address to bear out his statement. Mr Broad sentenced him to seven days' imprisonment. In the meantime he is to be examined by a doctor with regard to his sanity. The Casino de Venise narrowly escaped being the scene of a conflagration on Monday evening last. A ball was given by Mr lvl'llerron on the above evening, when a lamp was accidentally knocked down and broken; tho kerosene immediately ignited, but the flame was quickly got under, by the bystanders smothering it with their coats and some other articles near at hand. An accident, which happily was not attended by any very serious results, occurred at the Basin on Monday. A fall of stuff came down, covering two men, injuring one of them named Nicholas Barry, the other escaping unhurt.
