NARROW ESCAPE OF BISHOP PATTESON IN 1864.
Tn August, 1864, the schooner Southern Cross v'sited the Santa Cruz Islands. On Monday, the loth, Bishop Patteson went ashore on the N. W. coast of Santa Cruz, at the entrance of Graciosa Bay. The Bishop waded for some distance over the reefs, which are uncovered at low water, the boat lying off. The Bishop after a short absence returned to the boat and they got ready to put off, but the natives swam out and tried to drag the boat ashore. Failing do to this, the natives on the reef discharged their bows, and wounded three of the crew, viz., E. Pearce, in chest; Edwin Nobbs in cheek ; and Fisher Young, through wrist. The natives afterwards gave chase in their canoes, but the boat succeeded in getting away. Nobbs and Young subsequently died from lockjaw. No cause was a-signed for the attack, the natives appearing friendly and civil up to the time of the Bishop getting ready to depart.
