The news of the result of the Melbourne Cup arrived in Hokitika yesterday by the Claud Hamilton. It is somewhat remarkable that Pyrrhus and Glencoe from which so much was expected should hare proved inferior to their stable companions, the Pearl and Romula. The news produced some excitement in "Westport as numbers were interested in the result of the event. The steamer Murray arrived from Nelson last night, and will proceed south at noon to-day. The proceedings in the Warden's Court, Westport, yesterday were limited to the hearing of an application for a head race by Peter d'Ancona to convey water to his claim near Deadman's Creek. The application was granted. The steamer Kennedy, in conseqnence of a breakdown to her machinery, had to put back on the passage from Nelson to Westport. She arrived at the former port yesterday. Mr Reuben Waite purchased the ketch Amateur yesterday, and purposes taking her round to the New River with a cargo, prior to opening a store for the accommodation of the miners in the surrounding district. We noticed a few days back that a small craft had sailed from Nelson with a cargo consigned to a party at the New River, who also purposes opening business in that district. A London postman has been fined 403 and costs for delaying the progress and arrival of letters entrusted to his care for delivery. The defendant was seen by an inspector at the bar of the Victoria Tavern, Choumert-road with letters in his possession during the time that should have been occupied in the delivery. An information was laid, resulting in the above fine being inflicted. The Canterbury Philosophical Institute, at a meeting held a few days ago, nominated Mr Rollcston as a member of the Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute. A Miss Stothard is giving weekly scientific lectures to ladies in Auckland. Gentlemen are strictly excluded. An Auckland pedestrian, named Gwynne, has backed himself to walk 18 miles in three hours. It appears, from the Northern papers that the "billet" obtained for Mr A. f! Haleombe at Tauranga is that of Native Commissioner.
