Tn.R opening of the Mont Cenis tunnel has been celebrated on a magnificent scale at Turin. After fourteen jyears of unremitting labour the tunnel is an accomplished fact, and the greatest feat of engineering skill of ancient and modern times has been successfully realised. Some will be disposed to think that the dramatic interest attaching to this gigantic work culminated not on the day of the formal openiug, but some nine months previously, when to the delight of all Europe the Italian party and the French party met at a depth of 5000 feet from the surface of the earth. The work has indeed been admirably conceived and wonderfully acomphshed. We pause to consider to which should be accorded the highest praise, the economical ingenuity, that has penetrated through nearly 14,000 feet of solid rock, or the scientific skill which enabled Signors Mondino and Termine to direct its efforts to so brilliant an issue. In point of accuracy and vastness the feat stands alone, and it remains for a future age to furnish a parallel.
