LATEST PARLIAMENTARY.
The Annexation Bill was not reached on Friday night. It was the second on tho order of the day for Tuesday last, and would> probably, be discussed. During the debate on the Public Works Bill on Friday, Mr Shophard opposed that clause which provides that all the Nelson share of the Middle Island Railway fund (now about, £30,000) may be expended on roads on the South-west Goldfields as the Government may direct. Mr Harrison warmly supported the clause which had been inserted at his request, and pointed out that it was to the advantage of Nelson proper to develop the Gold Fields, but that the Nelson Government was unbelieving and had no faith in the resource* of the Gold Fields territory. He explained to the House the short-sighted policy which the Nelson Government had followed in regard to opening up the reefing district which he predicted would prove a second Thames. Messrs Collings, Lightband, Parker, and O'Conor are in favour of the Boundaries Bill and Districts Boards. The proposed Colonial Board of Works will be dropped, and Government will appoint an agent in various districts where the works are going on.
