THE CHASE AFTER TE KOOTI.

Information has been received in Napier from Mungapowhatu, in the Urewera country, up to the 30th ult. from Captains Mair and Preece, to the effect that they had then been five or six days seeking for Te Kooti's trail from the point where he had been defeated by Captain Porter, and they had ascertained that he was making for Waikato. All the parties were on his trail, and every precaution was being taken to prevent his escape from the Urewera country. Later news has arrived to the effect that the tracks of Te Kooti and his party have been followed out of the bush to the opea country about Taupo. What direction then taken is not known. A telegraphic deppatch from Tauranga to the South states that Te Kooti has escaped from his hiding place, the Ureweras frustrating the vigilance of his surrouuders. His force divided into two parties, one escaping through the Kaingaroa plains. Te Kooti himself went past Opepe, across the frontier to the east side of Taupo. From the same source it is stated that the Ngahmaru tribe, at the Thames, has made overtuers to supply Te Kooti in Waikato, with arms and ammunition. The " Hawke's Bay Herald " of the 10th, states :—" Captain Mair and force intercepted Te Kooti on Friday morning at ITerewiwi. A skirmish ensued, and they chased him some distance back into the Urewora country. It is expected that, now that be has been frustrated in his attempt to get to Waikato, he will return to the fastnesses of the Urewera country."
