The only chance of carrying the Westlau'l Public House Bill was lost last night, through the absence of Mr White. The second reading came on, but the adjournment of the House was moved at half-past 12 o'clock. Mr Harrison called for a division, and the adjournment was carried by two votes, and the Bill cannot possibly be reached again this ses.-ion. The new Immigration and Public Works Bill contains the following provisions of interest to Westland: — All matters on questions relating to the adoption of plans and specifications for any roads or railwaws are to be referred to and decided by the Boards of Works. Sub-Boards are to be appointed for distant places. Coal Fields Railways are specially provided for, so as to allow for applications for the construction of coal lines and the working of coal mines from local companies or parties. Water supply applications are to be made to tbe Board or Sub-Boards. Members of the Board of Works and of Sub-Boards are not to be disqualitied for holding seats in the Assembly. The Governor may construct or purchase tramways if the public interest warrant it. The Board may advance loans for the purpose of aiding private coal companies.
