THE LATE CONFLICT AT COREA.
The American Correspondent of the " Times" give the following explanation of the cause of the conflict betw r een the United States navy and the Coreans, referred to in previous telegrams: — (, It appears that five years ago the American ship General Sherman was wrecked on the Corean coast, and the crew were captured and horribly tortured, some being exhibited in cages as curiosities. One of them escaped reaching an American war vessel and gave an account of these atrocities. The steamer Shenandoah was sent to Corea to inquire into the matter and demand redress, but was fired into by the shore and as her commander had no instructions to return the fire he withdrew and reported the matter to the Admiral on that station. Thus the matter lay, nothing being done until Admiral John Rodgers was sent out, and he was given full authority to demand redress from the Corean Government, and if it was refused to chastise them to the best of his ability. For this pnrpose he took out with him field pieces and other appliances for land operations."
