Mr Fergusson, of the Grey district, the owner of Economy, has purchased of Mr Eedwood, a three-year-old gelding, Redan, by Ravensworth, out of Alma, by Sir Hercules —Jane, by Mamaluke. Mr Fergusson was fortunate in securing such a horse, as it is known to hare a fair turn of speed, and will grow into a powerful animal, sure to make a good steeplechase horse, while it will bo fast enough for any but the best company on the flat. The horse was shipped for Greymouth by the Charles Edward, which left Nelson on the Ist itist.
The San Francisco mail was due at Auckland according to contract on Sunday last. The telegiaph dates by thi3 mail will be to the 15th of Suez mail, per Tararua from Melbourno, arrived at Hokitika on Saturday morning. Telegrams were forwarded by Greville's agent, but the items referred to incidents that took place in July, the details of which had been very completely given in English papers to hand by the previous mail. The telegrams, in fact, were completely valueless, and on that account no extra was published on Saturday. The telegrams should have contained English news to the sth or 6th of September. A circular has been forwarded hy the Secretary of Customs to the Collectors of Customs in New Zealand, directing the latter to enforce rigidly in future the 20th section of "The Steam Navigation Act, 1866," which directs that no steamer shall bo permitted to carry deck cargo.
The ship James Nicol Fleming, 88 days from London, arrived at Port Chalmers, on Thursday. She brings ilo£ passengers, all well.
Mr Vogel is to move, for leave to introduce a bill intituled "An Act respecting the Government of Provinces ; also a bill intituled " An Act to transfer to the Governor, in certain events, the powers conferred on Superintendents." ■' ;, . '
The s.s. Wallabi left Wanganui on Saturday and arrived in the Bullet- roadstead yesterday morning, crossing the bar through a heavy sea at 6 p.m. She brings a large cargo of sheep in excellent order, and will discharge the same at the South Spit early this morning, afterwards proceeding to Wanganui. •
Mr and Mrs Frank Towers met with a very favourable reception at Charleston on Saturday evening, where they purpose extending their visit for a few liighis. The promised entertainment at Westport has in consequence been postponed until further notice.
