CHARLESTON.

(prom oitr own correspondent.) In the Resident Magistrate's Court, Charleston, on Thursday last, Michael Maguire brought an action against a man, named Fitzgerald, for an assault, alleged to have been committed on the night of September 6th. From the evidence of plaintiff and defendant, as also' a witness who was present, it appeared that the dispute originated about the possession of a hut, when some insulting language from both parties ensued, and eventually a scrimmage took place in which plaintiff got the worst of it and wanted to get satisfaction through the Court. Case dismissed. Donne v. Callaghan—Claim, £3 3s, for services rendered in suing the Southern Cross Company for wages ; the case having been heard on the 4th March, IS7O. The plaintiff held the defendant's I O U for the above amount. Mr Shapter appeared for the defendant and contended that the plaintiff had no right to recover upon the I 0 U as he was not a solicitor, and agents could not be placed on the same footing, and according to the statute, they had no legal demand, and an I O U was only prima facie evidence. Mr Broad said that in this case the I O U was evidence, as the instrument was acknowledged by the defendant; and there was no evidence to show that fraud was intended. The 10 U was given for work and labour done. Judgment for plaintiff with costs. A robbery was committed on Thursday evening last, from the window of Mr Aldous, hair-dresser, Princes-street, Charleston, the thief extracting a gold watch, valued at £45, the property of Mr Tait, photographer, and the first prize in an art union to take place at the latter end of this month. The watch was found on Friday morning, by Constable Williams and Mr Tait, in a closet at the back of the Empire Hotel. A man, named King, was arrested on suspicion the same morning, and remanded by the Magistrates, until Monday next.
