Two fishermen were drowned last night off the entrance to the "Waimea river, in consequence of the boat having capsized while attempting the passage of the boulder bank. Messrs "Wiliam "Webber and Sleaver, and Caroline Beynolds and child were also drowned. The survivors were picked up in an exhausted condition by the lighthouse keeper. A meeting of the ratepayers of the city was held last night, when a motion was carried favourable to the Nelson educational system. Country ratepayers express similar opinions. Timaiut, September 15. A large meeting at Greraldine has protested against the diversion of the railway. At Temuka a committee has been appointed to frame a memorial embodying similar views.

The London market shows want of animation. Glum is less active. Bailey at former rates. Leather is selling at previous prices and at a slight advance. Hides are in improved demand, at advanced rates.
