PRODUCE OF THE INCOME TAX.

The return recently laid before Parliament stating the public income and expenditure of the United Kingdom since the revolution of 1688—a return which will probably be known as Mr Chisholm's return, from its having been almost entirely the work of the Warden of the Standards—shows that since the introduction of the income-tax by Sir Robert Peel in 1843, and down to the end of the financial year 1868-69, the available receipts into the Exchequer from this tax have amounted, in the 27 years, to £209,464,785. In the first year, 1842-43, the available receipts were only £580,885; subsequently they have ranged from £5,120,997 in the year 1845-46 to £16,086,933 in 1858-57.
