Tho p.s. Charles Edward ighted tho Kate Conley, from Melbourno, on the passage from Greymouth. The latter vessol, after discharging her cai'co at Westport, will procood to Newcastle. Intending passongers aro requested to mate early application to the agents, Bailie and Humphrey. A meeting of tho North Westland District, M.U., will bo held at the Hall, Empire Hotel, to-day. In the evening the fourth anniversary of the foundation of tho order in Westport will bo celebrated by a ball. We learn that the assemblage is likely to provo larger this evoning than on any previous occasion of festivities in connection with the Westport branch of tho order.
Mr Walton Pell has been instructed by the Directors of the Buller Towing Track Company to pass tho works in connection with the track when completed. Mr Pell proceeds to Greymouth by tho first opportunity, to obtain suitable boats for tho Upper Buller traffic, and will return in the course of a few days. The enquiry into the circumstances of tho collision between the steamers Charles Edward and Murray occupied tho Bench until late in tho evening. Decision was resorved until this morning. Tho s.s. Gothenburg is announced to leave West Coast ports for Nelson, Lyttelton Dunedin, and Melbourne, on tho 12th inst., and will bo followed by the s.s. Kangitoto on the 14th inst. It is said that the next session of the Court of Appeal will not be held until May, 1872. It is probable that after the present
year, there will be two sittings • annually, namely in May and Novcmbor.
The contract with Webb and Halladay to run their steamers along the New Zealand coast has necessitated the introduction of a bill in the House of Representatives to admit foreign ships to the coasting trade in New Zealand.
Tenders for tho construction of tho dray road from Arahura to Stafford Town have boon accepted. Sections I and 2, Mr Coch-
rano, for £72 10s, mid .€285 ; and sections 3, 4, and 5, Mr Cassidy, for .£7OO, £927, and £772.
Mr W. M'Loan left Hokitika by tho s.s. Alhambra, on Friday, for Melbourne, for tho purpose of obtaining quartz crushing machinery for a claim at tho Inangahua. An inquest was held by C. W. Whitofoord, Esq., District Coroner, at Rod Jack's, on an infant child, namod David Black, who was drowned in a wator hole on Wodncsday last.
