GENERAL NEWS.
At a public meeting, held at the Ahaura on Friday last, the following resolutions were passed :—" That this meeting is of opinion that the Provincial Government of Nelson for some years past has ruinously mismanaged the Nelson South-West Goldfieids, and has displayed a total disregard of the wants and interests of the residents thereon." . . . "That it is desirable that the General Government should assume the control of public expenditure in this district, in order that the money voted for roads and other public works may be immediately expended." . . . . . "That the General Government be specially petitioned to construct a main trunk road from Greymouth to the Inangahua with Colonial Government funds."
"That a petition* setting forth the grievances of the be prepared and signed, and that the same, with copies of resolutions—one, two, and three—be forwarded to W. H. Harrison, Esq., M.H.8., for presentation to the General Assembly. Mr O'Neill's motion for reduction in the gold duty and fees for miners' rights, has been referred to the Goldfields' Committee.
The debate on the Education] Question was adjourned on Friday last, on the motion of Mr Harrison until the next sitting of the House.
Greymouth will shortly be made an eight o'clock telegraph station. Sir Charles Clifford has suggested the formation of a gallery of portraits of the Speakers of the House of Representatives, offering his own to commence with. The offer has been accepted and the portrait will be hung in the House.
The Government have admitted that they were unable to meet £50,000 worth of matured Treasury Bills deposited with the comptroller of revenue as aecurity for trust funds.
