The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. In the cause of Truth and Justice we strive. SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 1871.
The European mail, via San Francisco, will be despatched from Nelson on Monday, the 4th proximo. In our report of the mate's evidence, given at the inquiry into the stranding of the schooner Canterbury, a typographical error occurs. The figures 9ft lOin referring to the draught of the vessel, should read Bft loin. Our Charleston correspondent has furnished a report of the meeting held at Charleston on Thursday evening for the purpose of urging upon the Government the desirability of a denominational system of education. The particulars are held over for a future issue. A new contract has been entered into with the contractors, Dryden, Garey, and Gardner, for launching the schooner Canterbury seaward. The old tender is to be reverted to should the present attempt prove unsuccessful. £l5O is to include all expenses in launching the schooner seaward.
We arc happy to learn that mining matters on the Northern Terraces are exhibiting great improvement, the present prospects tending to show that the workings are still far fr;>m exhausted. Disney and party, after thirteen weeks' heavy driving have been successful in striking a rich lead of gold close to the main reef. The character of the gold is superior, being much coarser than any previously discovered in the district.
A somewhat scurvy trick was played upon a gentleman one day last week when on a visit to the Northern Terraces in company with a well-known Westport storekeeper. On the road they came to where a man was lying apparently senseless, and moved to compassion ono of our travellers dismounted, and Samaritan-like assisted the unfortunate man to the saddle. The latter was no sooner firmly seated than ho awoke from his apparent stupor, and digging his heels into the sides of the animal, quickly sped from view. The horse was left at a shanty several miles distant, with grateful thanks to the discomfited owner.
The tender of Messrs Mooro and Thompson, for maintaining the Buller road, has been accepted. The price, per chain, has not transpired. Mr George Gibson, of the Blow 11010 is the successful tenderer for the maintenance of the necessary repairs to the Cape Foulwind road during the current year. A new telegraph station for the receipt and transmission of messages was opened at Kakanui on Thursday. The township is situated in Otago, a few miles south of Oamaru. The s.s. Rangitoto was not tendered at Hokitika or Greymouth. She proceeded to Nelson and arrived at that port yesterday afternoon. Shortly after the receipt of Greville's telegrams yesterday evening, we learned that the p.s. Charles Edward had sailed at 530 p.m. for Wesport en route for Nelson, not calling at Hokitika as originally contemplated. She will leave here.for Nelson early this morning.
