THE PRESENT ARCHBISHOP OF PARIS.
In connection with the murder of the Archbishop of Paris, it is singular that he is the third prelate holding that office who has met with a violent death since 1848. In that year, Archbishop Affre was shot by the insurgents, while addressiug them from the top'of a barricade. His successor, Mgr. Sibour, was assassinated in 1857 by an insane priest. The Archbishop who has just been shot, Mgr. Darboy, was appointed to the episcopal see of Nancy in 1859, and in 1863 was promoted to the Archiepiscopate. Of his successor, Mgr. Dupanloup, " Men of the Time" gives the following notice: —"Dupanloup ("Bishop of Orleans), Felix-Antoine-Philibert, born Jan. 3, 1802, received his clerical education at Paris, became in 1827 confessor to the Due de Bordeaux, was employed in the same capacity by the Orleans family, and some months before the revolution of July was almoner to the Dauphin. In 1818 he attended the deathbed of the famous Talleyrand, of whom he was the most intimate friend. In 1811 the Abbe Dupanloup was elected to the theological chair at the Sorbonne. In consequence of his lectures upon Voltaire, a riot occurred amongst the students, and the lecturer was suspended. In April, 1819, he was appointed Bishop of Orleans, and was decorated with the Legion of Honour, Jan. 5, 1850. Since that time he has been very active in his writings against all attacks upon the territorial possessions of the Pope, M. Edmond About being his chief antagonist. He attended the Roman Catholic Congress at Malines in Sept., 1861, and his address produced a sfrong effect in encouraging the hopes of the Ultramontane party. He is the author of several works." We may add that during the late war, and especially during the campaign on the Loire, the Bishop was honourably distinguished by his unwearying efforts to mitigate the sufferings of his countrymen.
