THE FRANCO GERMAN FRONTIER.
The following districts in the neighbourhood of Belfort, which were ceded by the preliminaries, will return to France. 1. The whole canton of Germagny, with 13,500 inhabitants. 2. The eastern part of the canton of Belford, with 4000 inhabitants. 3. The eastern part of the canton of Delle, with 8000 inhabitants. 4. The western part of the canton of Fontaine, with 6000 inhabitants. 5. The parishes of Suaree, Chavanette, and Chavannes les Grands in the canton of Dammerkirch, with 1000 inhaitants ; the parishes of Rougemont, Laval, Petite Bontaine, and Bomagny, in the county of Kassmunster, with 2100 inhabitants ; 34,600 souls in all. The future frontier of the Empire to the south-west of Alsace therefore exactly coincides with the boundary of the two languages, as marked in the map of Boeckh and Kieppert. It may also be called a natural frontier, as it follows the watershed between the Dollerthal on the one side, and the valleyof the St. Madeleine and the St. Nicolas on the other, from Ballon d'Alsace to Than, and Altkirch. The further cession of territory made by France to Germany in exchange for the above districts includes the parishes of Audun, Aumetz, Fortoy Bure, Nilwingen, .Neuchef, Hevingen, Eedingen, Bussingen, Treffingen, Lummeringen, Knulingen, and Bulingen ; 7000 souls in all.
