THE PROGRESS OF THE VOLUNTEER MOVEMENT.
A return recently issued shows the progress of the volunteer force from the first year it was originated up to the 30th of November last:—ln 1858 the force numbered 15,122 ; in 1859 it decreased to 14,981, but the year following, it increased by upwards of 116,000 men, viz., 133,342. In 1861 a still further increase was noted — 179,571, but in the following year it fell off to about 3000 less, viz., 173,318. From this latter year, however, up to 1868, the numbers have gone on increasing as follows :—1863, 178,260'; 1864, 186,334 ; 1865, 194,430; 1866, 197,511; 1867, 204,092; and 1868, 215,379. In 1869 there was a decrease, as compared with the former year, of about 3000 men, viz., 212,395; and last year the total number of men constituting the force was 211,000. It will thus be seen that the force attained its greatest strength in 1868, when it numbered upwards of 215,000 men. The total number of officers last year in the force was 8827.
