Mr Waite has been delayed in Westport for several weeks awaiting the arrival of the Rose in order to proceed to the Big River. The roads in tho G-rey Valley are stated to have become perfectly impassable since tho late rains. Extonsivo landslips have taken place, and numerous bridges have been carried away by the floods. The sad and fafcil accHcnfc recorded in our telegram took place on Saturday last. We are requested to state that the evening's readings at Addison's, in aid of the Westport District Hospital, have been postponed until Tuesday, the Bth instant, owing to the deplorable death of the Rev. There is every appearance of a beach forming nearly parallel to the present low water line at the rear of Gladstone-street, and extending from the extremity of the north spit to boyond Dr Thorpe's residence. For some days past the unusual break at that distance from the shore favoured the belief that a large deposit of sand, sufficient to form a bar, had been piled up during tho late floods and severe weather ; and this is confirmed by tho report of persons who, having viewed the locality from a favorable position outside the bar, state that a largo beach is formiiio. the present depth of water scarcely exceeding two feet. If this should prove correct a very serious cause of apprehension to the residents in portions of tho town contiguous to tho beach will have been removed.
Ifc will be perceived by reference to our advertising columns that there is now at Motueka a Farmers' Club, formed for the purpose of supplying to consumers a guaranteed article in produce. We wish the Club success, and hope that this agent may be enabled to retrieve the good name of the Motueka district, which of late has been forfeited on tho coast through repeated shipments of inferior produce.
A violent assault wis made upon the bailiff of the R.M. Court, Westport, early yesterday morning, while executing a ca sa warrant against a man named Peter Kerr. An accident occurred yesterday, which it is feared may be found to have beon attended with serious result. A flat bottomed boat belonging to Peter the Greek, left Westport a few days ago with cargo, and Mrs M'Ncil and children as passengers. Owing to the flood in the river the boatmen did not proceed beyond Stony Fall until yesterday ; and it is assumed that shortly afterwards the boat must havo upsot as several packages were found floating down tho river, near to Westport, which were known to have composed a portion of her cargo. The recovered packages arc addressed to Mr Minderraann ot tho luangahua Junction. Since writing the above, Peter Williams, tho owner of the boat, has arrived iu Westport, and states that the accident occurred about half way up Snag Falls.
The boat Btruek upon a snag and overturned, the larger portion of tho cargo being recovered by tho othnr boats following. There were no passengers in the boat, and tho crew succeeded in getting upon it when bottom upwards, and in that position floated down thy falls. At tho foot of them the tow line got entangled, and the boat could not be extricated. The crew then took a canoe, reaching town yesterday evening.
