The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. In the cause of Truth and Justice we strive. THURSDAY, JULY 27, 1871.
Wo learn with regret that Mr O'Conor, who left town on Tuesday for tho luangahua district, for tho purpose of making arraHgoments for tho construction of the track for the Buller Towing Track Co., met with a serious fall which necessitated his immediate return to tow. Mr O'Conor is at present confined to his bed, having dislocated his shoulder in addition to receiving other bruises. We are not acquainted with the circumstances which led to the accident.
Wo are requested to direct attention to the tenders called for the construction of the Buller Towing Track. The work is divided into a number of small sections, which will readily admit of the work being undertaken by small parties of labourers. Tenders close on Monday next, the 31st instant, and specifications may be seen at the Times oflice, and other places as announced in the advertisement.
The case of Pitt v. Enterprise Quartz Mining Company was disposed of in the R.M. Court, yesterday. The claim was for £lO7 Us 6d, less .£l4 for calls due by tho plaintiff as a shareholder'in the company. The items consisted of £57 Os 6d for legal and prof, ssional expenses, chiefly incurred in the company's suit against Overhagen and party in respect to a water race claimed by the company, but the certificate of which had been permitted to lapse. The remaining £SO represented tho plaintiff's claim for services as legal manager to the company during a period of six months. Judgment was given for tho plaintiff for £93 0s 6d, and £1 18s costs. The outgoing San Francisco mail will be despatched from Nelson on the 7th proximo. Telegraphic communication was again suspended yesterday between Hokitika and Christchurch. We are consequently without information of the movements of the Murray. The s.s. _ Taranaki, with the San Francisco mail arrived at Nelson early yesterday morning ; and it is probable that tho Murray would leave for the West Coast during the day. Her arrival consequently may be looked for this evening or early in tho mornin?.
The Provincial Engineer directs the attention of carters to the dangerous state of the Orawaift Bridge. Tho public are cautioned not to use the bridge as a means of heavy traffic until tho necessary repairs have been completed.
The time for the closing of tenders for the erection of police quarters at Eeefton has been extended until Saturday. The Provincial Engineer had caused a copy of the specifications to be forwarded to Eeefton, but owing to the flooded state of the rivers they had not arrived. The extension of time will admit of local workmen tendering for the carrying out of the work.
The removal of the Nelson Hotel will, we believe, be commenced forthwith. A large brick chimney in the building has slightTy given way, while the encroachment of the sea is progressing notwithstanding the low state of the tides. Early yesterday morning the sea had undermined Cass's premises to such an extent as to sweep away the piles from the centre and rear of the building. It is at present entire, but should the weather continue, will, unless removed, become a complete wreck in the course of a few tides.
There was no appearance in the roadstead on Tuesday of the schooner Maid of Erin, and since then there has been a heavy northerly galo which would have necessitated her running for shelter or giving the coast a wide berth. The ketch Standard sailed for Charleston on Tuesday, but not in time to arrive at her destination prior to the present stormy weather. The schooner Three Friend has arrived at Charleston.
The p.s. Charles Edward arrived here yesterday afternoon, and proceeded to Nelson the same tide. The two prisoners committed for trial from Westport, and the necessary witnesses prcoeeded to attend the Supreme Court sittings, commencing on the 31st inst. The sitting of the Warden's Court at Reefton is postponed until the 9th proximo, and at Christy's until tho 10th. Messrs P. W. Hine, John Barrett. J. Ivess, VV. E. Hay, and F. L. Clarke are nominated for two vacant seats in the Hokitika Borough Council.
