CORONER'S INQUEST.
An inquest was held on Thursday at four p.m., at Mrs Webber's Post Office Hotel, before Mr Broad, upon the body of Edwin Groodall, who was killed the previous day at Mount Pleasant.
The jury .having viewed the body, the following evidence was taken:— William Pratt, sworn: lam a miner residing at Mount Pleasant. I have seen the body shown to the jury; it is the body of Edwin Goodall, aged 27 last March. He is a married, man, and was a mate of mine in a claim at Mount Pleasant. I last saw him alive yesterday morning at about 11 o'clock. He was working in the face putting in a shoot. I went up to get dinner ready; about three minutes elapsed when David Guthrie, who was working v» ith us, cried out that the ground was gone. I ran up immediately and the place where deceased was standing was covered with earth. It was about half an hour before we succeeded in extricating the body of deceased. His head was lying under a boulder of cement; when we removed the cement we found the head smashed in the same state as tho jury have seen it. We then conveyed the body to where it is now lying. David Guthrie, sworn, I am a miner working in a claim at Mount Pleasant. About 11 o'clock yesterday morning I was working at the top of the shoot, William Pratt and Edwin Goodall were working at the bottom. I heard the earth falling down and I immediately ran down and called William Pratt, and gave the alarm to M'G-rath's people. I thought some one was under as I had seen them there about minutes before. About twenty or 4.i>;»4._ I--J-. ~e iU J—..„ t». ncame out of the hut, I asked him if Goodall had gone to dinner, he said not, so wo concluded that he must be under the earth that had fallen down. I then assisted those who had come by that time in removing the earth. tn about half an hour we succeeded in finding the body of Edwin Goodall. He was quite dead with his head smashed in. I then assisted to convey him to Charleston.
After hearing the above evidence the jury immediately agreed in finding a verdict of accidental death.
