INTERPROVINCIAL ITEMS.
One of the crew of the lighter Victoria was knocked overboard by the tarpaulin in Dunedin harbour on Saturday last, and drowned. The body has not yet been recovered. A recent Auckland telegram states that a sudden fall has occurred in all mining stock, and a panic set in. Small holders became alarmed, consequent on the small quantity of specimens taken- out this week from the Caledonian, owing to the men having been employed in securing the mine, and sinking for a lower level. It is generally believed that the dividends will be small for the next few weeks, but will increase again. Tookey's remain firm. It is reported that Bopata has joined Te Kooti, but the rumour is not believed. Muirhead, sentence to death for the murder of Gilfillan, has been reprieved, and his sentenced commuted to penal sevitude for life. . His Lordship the Bishop of Dunedin has purchased from A. C. Strode, Esq., R.M., twenty-eight acres of land near Maori Hill, Dunedin, whereon he purposes erecting a handsome private residence. The officers of the Armed Constabulary in the North Island have been officially directed to acquire proficiency in the Maori language.
