PROTECTION is hereby granted, under the provisions of " The Goldfields Act, 18G6," to John Matjndeii Langdon, for the term of Four Years from the date hereof, for a PUNT PERKY across the Buller river, near the telegraph line, subject to the following conditions:— 1. That a substantial Punt, capable of carrying Twelve tons, be placed on the river, in good working order, within two months from*this date, and maintained in good working order during the term of this protection. 2. That competent Perrymen be always in attendance, and the Perry conducted, at all times, to the satisfaction of the Warden of the district. 3. That the Punt wire, or apparatus required for working the Punt, shall not interfere with shipping, or with the navigation of the river. 4. This protection shall not extend beyond 2\ miles from the mouth of the River Buller, and shall not interfere with, or prevent any Boats plying for hire on any part of the river. 5. That the Tolls to be charged for the use of the Punt shall not exceed the following,

Foot passengers ... ... 0 0 6 Horse and rider ... ... 0 2 6 Loaded pack-horse... ... 0 2 6 Cattle, each 0 10 Sheep, per hundred ... 1 5 0 Horse and dray, loaded ... 0 5 0 Horse and dray, empty ... 0 3 0 Goods, per ton, not on a dray 0 2 6 Government Officers, including Police, road overseers, postmen, and labourers, when on duty... Free Horses required by any of the above-mentioned Government Officers or persons Free 6. The "Warden of the district may, on being satisfied that the Ferry is not conducted in an efficient manner, and in accordance with those conditions, suspend the operation of this protection until the matter of complaint be removed ; and if the matter of complaint be not removed within a reasonable time, the Superintendent shall have the power to cancel this protection. 7. All Regulations which may at any time be brought into force under Section 13 of " The Goldfields Act, 1866," shall be deemed applicable to this protection as if it had been granted under the same. 8. This protection shall not be transferred without the sanction of the Superintendent. 9. This protection shall not affect the right of the Government to erect or grant protection for any Bridge within the protected limits. OSWALD CUKTIB, Superintendent.

IT is hereby notified, that it is intended, after the expiration of Two Months from the date hereof, to Grant Leases for Gold-Mining Purposes of the Crown Land within the District of the Nelson South-west Goldfields, hereinafter described, viz:— 1. A Block of Land, containing Four Acres more or less, situated at Waite's Pakihis, Buller District. Applied for by Michael Connolly and others. 2. A Block of Land, containing Six Acres and Thirty Perches, more or less, situated at Hatter's Terrace, Buller District. Applied tor by James M'Gowan. 3. A Block of Land, containing Ten Acres, more or less, situated at Bald Terrace, near the Caledonian, Bullor District. Applied for by Hugh M'Masters.
