Now that there is a probability » France resuming a state of quietude, attention will be drawn more closely to the course of events in Spain, the latest despatches from Madrid showing that great dissatisfaction prevails with the rule of Amadeus. In 8 session of the Cortes on Monday the opponents of the monarchy boldly moved the establishment of a Republic, while the partisans of Don Carlos showed their contempt for the present King by proposing a declaration that the election of Amadeus is void, m that their favourite is the rightful King. Evidently the reign of the Italian at present on the throne |« drawing to a close, and the for the succession has commenced. * strong Government would not tolerate such treasonable utterances ifl lM highest legislature.
