RIVER PROTECTIVE WORKS.
(To the Editor of the Westport Timet and] Charleston Argtts.) Sir, —I wish to draw public atten-j tion to the stone work now in progress! for the protection of the river bank at! the foot of Gladstone-street. The! specifications for that work provided] that the stone used was to be in an. j gular blocks, whereas the stone de-j posited is water-worn and nearly round. The object, of course, in using! angular stone is that the groin shou'dj retain its position, as material of that] shape would have a firm grip on the! bed of the river and the bank. The position of the work renders it still more necessary that the specifications should he adhered to, as the river bank at that spot is exceptionally steep. The description of stone at present deposited cannot answer the purpose of a solid and permanent work. H the contractor be allowed to continue forming the groin with this description of stone, the first flood will carryaway the entire work, and the £3OO which will have been expended on its construction will be completely thrown away. I am, &c, Westportia*
