LIBELS ON JENNY LIND'S HUSBAND.
It seems that "Woodhull and Clafin's Weekly (an American journal) published a paragraph stating that Madame Goldschmidt's husband had run through her splendid fortune, and that " the ill-mated pair" had separated by mutual consent. This paragraph was copied into "Public Opinion,'* a London paper, and a suit was brought to recover damages for the libellous publication. Prom the testimony of Madame Goldschmidt, her husband, and their friends, it was proved that the marriage had been a most happy one; the pair have had three children, and the ample fortune of the lady has been increased handsomely. The result was that " Public Opinion' ■ was mulcted in the amount of £750; another journal which copied the item had to pay a like sum, and a third paid £SOO.
♦ A new version of "root, hog, or die"—" Perforate the soil with thy proboscis, thou quadruped of the Queen City, or relinquish thy vitality."
