THE NEW MAIL CONTRACT.
Speaking of the new Mail Contract, the " Otago Daily Times" says: —" That Mr Vogel has promoted an excellent mail service for New Zealand, no one can dispute. The vessels to be employed possess first-clas3 accommodation, and the fact that the Nevada arrived within her contract timo, establishes at once their suitability for the service. It is only to be regretted that the financial condition of the colony is not such as to justify the annual payment of £50,000 for this purpose. The opinion may be said to be unanimous that the steamers are unnecessarily large for the coastal service. Members of the Ministry have not hesitated to express this opinion. Indeed, Mr Vogel himself went further, for in speaking in tne House last year of this class of vessels
