(PEE GEEVILLE's TELEGBAM COMPANY, eeutee's agents). Chaeleston, Monday. A miner, named Thomas M'Grath, working at the Four Mile, met with a serious accident on Saturday. He was working a truck, and, in the act of tipping, was thrown from the tramway a depth of sixteen feet. M'Grath alighted on a stump seriously injuring his stomach. He was conveyed to the Charleston Hospital where he died at 1 a.m. to-day. An inquest will take place at noon. Nelson, May 29. The petition in the matter of the river channel has been received. Dr Hector and Mr Blackett have been instructed to report upon the most desirable form of protective work, and £250 have been placed upon the estimates to be disposed of according to their recommendation. Dunedin, May 27. The Council met on Thursday. The Superintendent congratulated the House upon the progress of the Province, which, he sai'l, would be greater if made a distinct colony, and left to its own resources. Whilst advocating great retrenchment, he thinks it would be incomplete unless the General Government reduce the number of its civil servants by amalgamating the offices. Campbell's store, Kakanui, was totally destroyed by fire. The loss is estimated at one thousand. It is supposed to be the work of an incendiary. Mr Gillies is elected Speaker by the Opposition. Eeynolds was supported by tho Government. A doctor was asked to dance the " lancers." He declined, but expressed a willingness to lance the dancers.
