PUBLIC MEETING AT REEFTON.
(communicated.) A public meeting was held at Anderson and Barker's store, Eeefton, on Thursday evening last, to give some kind of expression of feeling at the abrupt removal of Mr Cooper from the office of clerk of the Court there. The meeting was a large one, and included nearly the whole of the busi-ness-men of the township. Mr Thomai Barker was called to the Chair. The Chairman said they were all aware of the object of the meeting, which was to express regret at Mr Cooper's departure from the district. He had had a long acquaintance with Mr Cooper, and always found him, iu his official capacity, to be obliging and courteous. No doubt the removal of such an efficient officer would be an injury to the district.—(Hear, hear). Mr L. Davies, in moving the following resolution, commented at length upon the unjust manner in which Mr Cooper had been removed. People were aware that he was very obliging and would put himself out to oblige the public; he had no hesitation in sayjng that he had given very general satisfaction.—(Hear, hear.) He, would therefore propose the following resolution : Tiiat this meeting views, with extreme regret, the action of the Provincial Executive, in removing Mr Cooper from his office of Clerk of the Court at Reefton, and looks upon buc!i removal as a loss to the district at large. Mr Patrick Monahan seconded the resolution. Mr Oxley wis'ied to remark, before the resolution was put to the meeting, that, as an old resident and storekeeper of the Westport District, he had always found Mr Cooper a very efficient and useful official, and he, for one, was sorry to see him leave. The resolution being carried unanimously, after a vote of thanks to the Chairman, the meeting separated.
