WESTPORT. Illdll WATER.. This Day ... 10.50 a.m.. 11.5 p.m. To-morrow 11.20 a.m., 11 34 p.m. Al? RIVALS. Airil 19— Charles Edward, p.s., Holmes, 'from GreymoU h. UEPATVTUItES. April 19 —Eose, ketch, for Brighton. Three Friends schooner, for Charleston. Charles Edward, p.s., Holmes, for Nelson. Brothers and Sister, for Greymouth. PASSENUER J.IST. Per Charles Edward, from Hokitika and Gr-ymouth—Judge Ward, Mrs Goff, Mr and Mrs Allen, Miss Allen, Messrs Hewitt, ,I.often, Campbell, Hamilton, Vosse, Picka il. Hodgson, Fry, Lewis, Taylor, Cutts, lU'Glashan, Jones, and nine original. The Oamarn Dock works are fairly commenced at last. The first five large blocks of ronerete have been moulded by the contractor, Mr Walkem, on the shingle bank Hear the lagoon- Each block contains 320 cu-iic feet, and weighs over 20 tons. The concrete is made by a mixture of one part of I''irtland cement, with five parts of shingle, :t'.i- one of sand, each by measure. Part of !*:'.■ shingle is whole and part broken, and f/'tcrit is mixed, it is put into the wooden 'mould and well rammed. The mould is made <>l thick planks and braced with iron, and can h readily, taken apart, as it is all fastened by s-rew bolts. As soon as the block has set sufficiently— i.e,\ after a few days—the mould is t ,ken off, and is ready for another block. A large quantity of cement is required, as each ■*>'ock takes about 13 casks. Only 900 casks H. i vi"as yet been imported for the Trust, and 11 h -se are stored in Oainaru, and will very . s"on be used up ; it is White and Son's best i.J iii Und, and proves to be of excellent • quality. The Dock Trust have hitherto been • prevented by the Government from ordering ■ uTi esh supply ; and it seems that they have n.< yet been unable to obtain funds to meet i' v. outlay ulready incurred, although everythat h s been done has been with the t<-'notion of the Government. It is therefore .*] . able that the works wdl come to a stand- !-. 11 before long for wan' of cement, in which ci>i', we presume, the contractors will have a heavy claim for loss of time, as it was part of 1 lie bargain that the cement should be supplied to the contractor by the Trust. The R.M.S.S. Geelong, with the Australian "mails for England and the East, left Melbourne, on March 28th. She cleared at the Customs for Point de Galle, with 94,178 ounces of g Id, .£13,850 in specie, and a large •number of passengers. Amongst the passengers from Melbourne was Mr Hutih George, general manager of "Argus," who was •accompanied on board by a numerous following of personal friends, as well as of gentlemen 'connected with the office. Mr Synie, of the -Melbourne " Age," was also a passenger by : i e mail steamer. An English paper relates a singular discovery made on board the schuoner Thomas •: nd Joseph jut as she was leaving Yarmouth •-. a-bor. It was found that one of the crew was a young Kussian female in man's clot hes, and from subsequent inquiiies it turned out she lt.il shipped as cabin-boy at Wilburg some j .onths back, whilst the vessel was at that ) ort taking in a cargo of deals. She had p rformed her duties satisfactorily during the voyage, and had escaped detection till the • ther day when her sex was discovered, and V;e was put on shore. It appears that the -o iptain had induced her to leave with him in lis vessel, and that it was only when he wanted to get rid of her that the deception was discovered. The matter was disposed of hy the master giving the girl £3. It was somewhat singular that an hour or two after -the vessel left the harbor, and while proceeding north, she missed stays and got upon • Oaistor Beach, where she still remains.
