A grand procession was formed in the following order: —Troopers, band, volunteers, members of the Borough Council, his Excellency the Governor, volunteers, foot police, members of the Fire Brigade, Odd Fellows, Foresters, citizens on foot, and horsemen. The whole formed at the junction of Tudor and Bevell streets. The town was illuminated in the evening. An undress levee is now (11 a.m.) proceeding. The Census returns give the population of Otago at 61,000, showing an increase of 12,300 for the four years. The congregation of the First Church have resolved to erect a monument to Dr. Burns at a cost of £SOO. Scarlatina is spreading in the Waikouaiti district, there being eight deaths recorded last week. The municipalities of Balclutha and Milton have petitioned the Provincial Government to construct the Clutha line of railway at both ends simultaneously. B. B. Cargill is Provincial Secretary and Secretary of Public Works; Turnbull, Provincial Treasurer; Houghton, Goldfields Secretary • Macarthur is a member of the Executive, without office. 4 15, p.m. Houghton, in addition to the Goldfields secretaryship, has charge of Public Works. The results of the Census for 1867 and 1871 are published. The respective totals are as follow: Otago, (without Southland), 48,574 and 60,570 ; Southland, 8000 and 10,000 ; Dunedin and suburbs, 18,638 and 21,460. There is an increase in the City of Dunedin proper of 2200 since the Census of 1867. Bluff, April 14. Latest Melbourne advices state that breadstuffs are easier, with only a moderate trade demand. Plour, £ll 15s to £ls. Wheat, Victorian, 6s 3d. Oats are in fair demand at 3s sd. Kerosine is being sold, to arrive, at 2s 4d to 2s 4£d. Spit, Napier, April 14. A large building in Goldsmith's Road, the property of Major Green and adjoining his dwelling house, was burnt this morning. The loss is partially covered by insurance. The building originally was Steward's canteen.
