No place could possess greater natural facilties, and a trifling outlay would bring them to great perfection. In the first place, we have the river ready for the application of either steam or horsepower. Perhaps the traffic is not now sufficiently great to warrant the outlay and risk attending steam ; but, if it were, by extending the Orawaiti tramway four miles, and placing a steamer in connection with it above Snag Fall, a great difficulty would be obviated, and an easy course left for the steamer to the Junction, but for many years to come horse-power will be found sufficient. By horse towing goods could be conveyed from "Westport to the Landing at the Inangahua in one day at a very moderate price, and from that to the reefs very little would make a first-rate road for drays. Thus provisions at the reefs might be reduced to a price very little above that ruling in town. The traffic would, as a necessary consequence, be very much increased, and even the boatmen would be benefitted, inasmuch as they could then make their trips easily, oftcuer, and without the hardships they are now compelled to endure. The inhabitants of the district should memorialise the Government and the Provincial Council to take immediate action in respect to the sale of the land in the Inar.gahua district, and making the necessary roads to what would then speedily become a prosperous settlement. There are several claims upon the reefs now waiting for machinery, but I fear the expense of conveyance will be so great as to deter capitalists from supplying it.
