Auckland, April 1, Via Alexandra, April 8. Colonel Lyon met Whitiora and Kumeti yesterday, near Turner's; there were no Europeans present. The information is reliable, however, that Whitiora said that storekeepers, labourers, sheep and cattle owners, farmers, gentlemen residents, and ministers of religions were to remain unmolested in the Waikato, under the protection of Tawhia. It appears that he was oiling the machinery, when his sash became entangled in it. He was dragged in and killed instantaneously.
