Auckland, April 1, Via Alexandra, April 8. Colonel Lyon met Whitiora and Kumeti yesterday, near Turner's; there were no Europeans present. The information is reliable, however, that Whitiora said that storekeepers, labourers, sheep and cattle owners, farmers, gentlemen residents, and ministers of religions were to remain unmolested in the Waikato, under the protection of Tawhia. All Government officials to return to England after the meeting. Letters are sent to the same effect. Auckland, April 3, Via Alexandba, April 10. Whitiora gave me (Correspondent) a copy of the letter in which Colonel Lyon says : " The translation of the King's message is as follows : " ' Kapina, March 31. "To you, friend, this word ! Tou all, storekeepers, laborers, graziers, farmers, gentlemen, remain in Waikato, under Tawhia's protection. All Government representatives to return to EngLmd. That is all, Whitiora, Tapihani.' "
DuNEDitf, April 8. The Volunteers met with a miserable reception. They were entertained at a dinner on Thursday. Dr Moran's pastoral, threatening to anathematise parents who send their children to the common schools, excites much attention. It has been condemned outside. 11.M.5. Blanche and Rosario are to be re-commissioned at Sydney. Montgomerie goes home, and will be succeeded by the Basilisk, 6 guns. Sailed: City of Dunedin, for London, with a full cargo. Thirty tons of stone from a new reef at Conroy's, yielded 170 ounces of gold. At a sale of sugar, ex Premier, most lines were quitted ; prices showing a decline on the average of thirty shillings per ton. The reefs in the Luke district still look promising. Very encouraging prospects have been got from the Ida Valley Deep Lead. The yield for the week is 191 ounces, being an average of one and a-half ounces to the load. New and very rich ground was opened on Friday; eleven small loads yielded 35 ounces. John Pascoe, Manager of the Cornish Company, at Skipper's, has been accidentally killed. It appears that he was oiling the machinery, when his sash became entangled in it. He was dragged in and killed instantaneously.
