Cargo: for Dunedin, 293 tons; Oamarn, 15 tons ; Timaru, 16 tons ; and Lyttelton, G7 tons. Melbourne, March 30. The elections closed without any disturbance. Hi£iribotham was most unexpectedly defeated. James Burke, a well-known coal merchant, has been killed through a buggy accident. Ilia funeral took place yesterday, and was largely attended. Heavy storms of wind and rain have prevailed since Monday, but it is now tine. Large arrivals of sugar still continue. Market tolerably firm. 3000 uajjs of Mauritian sugar's sold at auction yesterday, but at a reduction oi 40d all round.
The Russian corvette Haydowrach (?) has arrived, and after remaining a few days, proceeds to New Zealand. An attempt made by the Mayor to form a Committee to collect a war relief fund has failed. Macklin, the brewer, has been committed for trial for forgery. Andrew Lowe, an ex-M P., has been sentenced to six months' imprisonment for larceny as a bailee. Men are being sworn in as a naval reserve. Arrived : "Waterman from Greymouth ; Swordfish, from Dunedin; Australian, from Lyttelton. Sailed: Hero (s), for Auckland j Lady Denison, for WellingtonA meeting of J. L. Burke's creditors has been held. The liabilities are £55,000, and the nominal assets £60,000, of which £22,000 are due by a Now Zealand firm. It is expected that the unsecured creditors will get five-pence in the pound. William Duthrie, produce merchant, has stopped pavment. Liabilities, £IO,OOO. . Flour is selling at £ls to £ls 10s. Wheat, scarce and wanted at 6s 8d to 6s 9d for best Adelaide. The Claud Hamilton sailed on the 23rd March for New Zealand, but returned next morning, one of her boilers having burst. Arrived: Alhambra, from New Zealand. Sydney. Practice at the beHeries commenced on Saturday and was highly successful. The brig Dayspring foundered at sea. The crew were saved by tbe Wonga Wonga. The Assembly has placed flour and wheat on the free list, and declined to increase the ad valorem duties. It is considered that the Act will pass without further amendment. A motion to increase the ad valorem duties was negatived, and a duty on flour rejected. A memorial has been presented to the Government in favor of subsidising the Californian mail. Sugars are firm, and sales at last quotations. Flour firm, at £ls ; wheat scarce. Maize, 3s 7d to 4s. Wool: prices are fully maintained except for best fleece. A vessel from Torres Straits, brings £3OOO worth of pearl shells. Adelaide. The Port Darwin telegraph is progressing favorably. Parliament is prorogued to 30th June. Wheat has advanced to 5s 9d, at which price sales are made. Country flour £l3.
