Eleven thousand packages of tea were quitted at auction yesterday, at fair prices. Maize, 4s 5d to 4s 6d. Dcnedin, April 4. Sailed: Christian M'Ausland, for London, with the largest cargo of the season, including 3900 bales of wool, 180 tons preserved meats, and eighty tons of wheat. Burgundy won the principal event at the Hawkesbury Race Meeting. The case of the Government against the " Daily Times " for libel, is closed. Carnach admitted opening the "Daily Times'" special telegram, on board the Gothenburgh, in the presence of the captain and passengers. The defence attempted to prove that Lemon, Telegraph Manager, was engaged in commercial transactions. Preparations are making for a public reception of the rifle representatives, on their return. April 5. A new Government is not yet formed. The Escort brought down 11,6140z of gold. Scarlet fever has broken out at Waikouaiti. John Hughes, late goldfields' member in the Provincial Council, died suddenly yesterday at Cromwell. 4.50 p.m. The report of Hughes' death turns out to have been a canard. Wellington, April 4. Edith Palmerston played here last night to a large audience. She was most favourably received, and the entertainment was a great success. Christchuech, April 4. His Excellency will patronise the Athletic Sports to-day. Cedeno will be hung to-morrow morning. April 5. Cedeno was executed at eight o'clock this morning.
Auckland, March 30, Via Alexandra, April 5. There was an interview with Whitiora Moati, chief of Hautera, to-day. Todd's murderers are said to be at Turner's, three miles from here. Colonel Lyon has been telegraphed to proceed there to-morrow. Tapihana has returned to his old quarters on the Moungamore, where he has determined to settle, " peaceably," ho adds. Patea, April 5. Weyergang has been elected to the Provincial Council of "Wellington. Blenheim, April 5. A great fire occurred here this morning. Pobson's wool store and premises adjoining were destroyed. Estimated loss £6OOO ; covered by insurance to the extent of £2OOO. Incendiarism is suspected. Spit, Napier, April 4. A fire took place on Sunday night at Hahett's run, Pukitiriri, burning down the homestead, and a man, named Welch, perished in the flames. The other inmates with difficulty escaped.
