ESPORTS. "Per Charles Edward, for Hokitika—l box gold, Bank of New South Wales. The Anchor Line steamer Charles Edward • rrri-id off the bar at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Siie left Nelson on Monday, at 4.30 p.m., calling at Mutuefca, and leaving there it 8 o'clock. Made a rap'd run of eighteen hours, though very deeply laden. Experienced fine weather throughout the passage, and crossed the bar at 7.30 p.m. next day. The bulk of her cargo was for this port. Landed forty <onß of cargo and 16 passengers, and sailed at ten on Wednesday night for Hokitika. Atrial (says the " Grey Argus") was irMe on Saturday at the shop of Mr Simmons ol ~i, instrument constructed fjr the purpose of weighing the eargo of a vessel, by means of .an indicator which the inventor (Mr S. Roff) ; affirms can be placed in the cabin of the master of a ship and tell him at a glance whether the vessel has gained or lost a ton of weight. The model was tested by weights placed in it up to 401b, and every five pounds wasaectlrat ly indicated. It did not matter - whether the weights were placed at the bows, stern, or amidships, the indication was in «Vory instance correct. What the precise principle of the invention is we are as yet nnable to say, but from what we have seen, we believe that the invention is one of great importance, and will ere long, be generally adopted. It is, wo believe, the intention of the inventor to take out a patent at an early . day. Who . u test is made on a large scale wo . -anoy give a fuller description. Congress, at the last session, having appro- > printed 60,000 dollars for deepening the entrance to the httrbo- at Midway Islands in the Pacifie Ocean, belonging to the United States, the -work of deepening tho channel was placed in charge of Lieutenant-Com-manding Sicm-d,ii\ho went out a few months Jigo in the United Stjircs steamer Saginaw, with a schooner an I efficient force to commence the wort. Kcpertji have been received from the force, showing the condition of the work uufi .July 21. A channel of at least 175 feet, mua; be cut at, t .«■ I.4»ivls, which is .the least ppac* that win be used with safety to vessel of much capacity. It is estimated that at lo.iaf. 1/5,000 dollars will be r.-quired to execute, t lie work, and three or four years of industrious empl- yment; hence the appropriation made at last session will be wholly inadequate to the task. A Bostonian of experience is engaged in removing the obstructions, having been awarded tho contract. As h midway coaling station it will be of essential service in the prosecution of our trans-Pacific commerce. Congress will scarcely hesitate to make a fresh appropriation, particularly as the difficulties of working and removing tne coral reef's could not be seen or estimated beforehand. —" N-Y.
