On Sunday, weather still being the same, remained at anchor all day. Started on Monday at 9 a.m., and got as far as Bush End, where she was obliged to bring up again. The weather moderating towards evening got under weigh at 6 o'clock, and arrived as above. Experienced strong S.W. wind, with heavy head sea throughout the night.

VIOLENT GALES and LOSS or LIFE.

During January 15th and 16th heavy gales prevailed on various parts of the British coast, and many casualties are reported, accompanied, unhappily, in several instances by loss •of life. The boats of the National Lifeboat Institution were the means "of saving the crews of distressed vessels in numerous instances. The Italian schooner Ruico was at anchor under Speeton Cliffs, Filey, on Sunday morning, January 15, when she parted her cables in the gale, and went on Filey Brigg Rocks. In three minutes the vessel had capsized, and out of the crew of thirteen, only one man was saved. At Deal eight poor boatmen lost their lives almost within earshot of their own homes. Shortly after six o'clock (in the midst of a heavy gale from S.S.W. and in a driving rain) a "flare" was observed on the Goodwin Sands, intimating that a vessel was in distress, and immediately preparations •were made for launching two luggers (the England's Glory and the Reform)°to her assistance. The former went on her way in safety, but most unfortunately the latter failed to clear the " haul of rope" in getting off and drifted to leeward—the force of the gale and strong flood tide driving her violently against the pier, which is about 200 yards north of the stage from where the boat was launched. The force of the collision carried away the foremast, and a heavy sea Bent the boat against the cross bars of the piles, and she immediately began to fill. Knowing their perilous p .sition, the crew commenced taking off their heavy sea-cloth ng, and ropes were at once thrown from the pier, but the boat sank before any help could reach them. Most of the crew clung to the spars and sails, and floated away with the tide. The screams of the poor fellows as they were one by one swallowed up by tho waves were most heartrending. Notwithstanding tho terrific sea a galley-punt was put off from the shore to save their:, but being insufficiently manned, was unable to do so. Further north, however, a boat was launched by two boatmen, who sue ceeded in rescuing three of the crew. The bodies of two more were washed ashore near Sandown Castle. JBY ELECTRIC TJ2LBORAPE. ARRIVALS. Lyttelton.—March 28—Rangitoto, from Wellington. GKKrJirouTii. — Mcrch 29—St Xilda, f rom "Westport. DEPARTURES. GRETiiorTH.—March 20— Charles Edward, for Wfiotport.
