! The Anchor Line's steamer Chaile3 Edward, arrived in the river on Thursday morning's tide. She left Nelson on Tuesday at. 6.30 a.m. Called at Mott.eka, and left there ■at ten o'clock. Experienced a strong N.W. ■gale in the bay, and put into Astrolabe Roads for shelter. Left again on Wednesday early, but was compelled again to bring up under Separation Point. Lay there all ('ay, and left at 7 p.m.; crossed this bar at 10,30 a.m. on Thursday. Sho sailed the same evening forHokitika.

The s.s. St-. Kiltla left Wanjranui for Westport with a cargo of cattle on Thursday, at, 8 p.m. She will probably bo detained by the boisterous weather.

Yesterday it blow a perfect gale from the north-west, and there was a heavy surf. The

steamer Wallabi, bound for Greymouth. an ' tlie ketch Standard, loaded for Karanica, uro lying in the river awaiting an opportunity to proceed to their destinations. A vinegar bottle was lately picked up in Addis Bav, among a lot of simple waifs. This particular bottle, however, attracted attention, and it was found to Contain a scrap of paper, on which was written : "Aug. L 7, 7 —. Ship 'D'uikold.' We arc foundering. The ship is sinking fast. There is no chance of saving her—Captain Hook." The cutter Glimpse seems to have had a very narrow escape of being lost on a recent 1 tip to Napier. Messrs Levin and Co. received the following telegram from Captain Crouchei—'• Bpit, 'Napier, Friday, 2.30 p.m. Just strr ved at, Napier, Lost Government boat overboard ; broke, six stanchions ; smashed in the hatches ; lost the galley and companion top; had three feet of water in the hold ; three of the seamen wero washed overboard, but, were fortunately recovered. — « Hawke's Bay Herald," March 6.
