EESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Monday, Maech 20. (Before Charles Broad, Esq., E.M). William Leek pleaded guilty to a charge of fighting in the pnblic street on Saturday night last. Fined £l\ and costs. Charles Weitzel and William Carr v/ere each fined 40s and costs for keeping a light in the bar of tieirl licensed houses, on the morning of the! 15th instant.
Simpson v. Ellis.—Claim, £1 10s for G kits of oysters. In consequence of the Eesident Magistrate and Di Henry, J.F., having been suposnaed in this case to give evidence for the defendant, the case was adjourned to Westport, and the Magistrate told the defendant that he would have to pay witnesses' expenses. WAEDEN'S COUET. APPLICATIONS FOB GOLD MINTNO LEASES. Charles M'Carthy applied for a goli mining lease. Kirkpatrick and part objected stating that they also weri applicants for the same ground. Mr Shapter appeared for tin objectors. Charles M'Carthy, sworn: On tb 16th January I pegged out the groui and applied for it in the usual manuei I put down six pegs. The r groundi in form like tho letter L. On the 201 of February I accompanied the sui veyor and the objectors to the grouni the pegs were then out of the groun with the exception of one. I notice a second peg lying at a corner of tl area. I pointed out to the survey! where it had been. The ground coi sists of tailings from the neighborii claims. We hold a prior water rigl from the creek below. At differe times we have been obliged send down some of our wat to get rid of the tailings. we get the lease applied for we slu be able to use that water to advantag We intend to work by ground-shH ing, and, if necessary, by crushiM machinery. 9 Cross-examined : Keating applifl some time since for the area. WecH jected then on the ground that he woJH have to cut a tail-race, and thercfl would deprive us *bf water to nlifl we have a right. As a practJH miner I do do not think that the groofl would prove remunerative, uniS worked by hydraulics. The mode that we infl working is by a pump, wheel, and ■ tery, if required. We could liftfl tailings about twelve or fifteen feetfl formerly applied for this ground. I could return any water that might <■ with the tailings into M'Carthy's^^H Kirkpatrick also gave corroH tive evidence. Alfred Greenwood, sworn: 11 veyed the two applications appließ and went to see the ground.
