THE GREYMOUTH RACES.
Second Day. The result of tbe first day's racing appeared in our last issue. On Friday the attendance was much larger but the racing did not excite a corresponding interest, owiug to tbe fact that there was nothing to compete with Mr Eedwood's mare. The race for the handicap of 250 sovs was regarded as a certainty for Peeress, and the result proved the correctuess of tbe prophecy. We subjoin the following particulars of the second day's racing, abridged from tbe" Greymouth Star " : Gkey Valley Hurdle biaxdicap, of 50 sovs. Two miles and and a half. Mr John Seaton's b g Supple Jack, 5 years, list (Blyth) 1 Mr Taylor's b g Gamester, aged, list 101b (Taylor) 2 Mr James Steele's gr m Ino, aged, 9st (M'Giaslmn) 3 Betting.—Slight odds on Supple Jack against the field. This, the first event of the second day, was even more ridiculous than the opening one of the meet. To start with, Ino was simply entered to make up. Supple Jack and Gamester took the first hurdle without any mishap, but coming to the second one, Gamester baulked and pulled in, leaving Supple Jack, beautifully ridden by Blyth, to canter round for the 50 sovs. Telegraph Stakes, 15 sovs. Entrance, sovs. One mile and a half. The -winner to be sold for £2O. Weight for age. Mr W. S. Cam pell's be g Eobin Hood (Blyth) 1 Mr Hopwood's Moss Eose (owner) 2 Mr James Steele's Ino (M'Glashan) 3 Betting.—Even on Eobin Hood against the field.
From the first Robin Hood had itall his own way ; a race at the finish taking place between Moss Kose and luo, resulting in Moss Rose taking second place. Robin Hood was bought in for £23. G iiEYirouTit Jocket Club Handicap, of 230 sovs, open to all horses. Two miles and a half; Becond horse to receive 40 sovs out of the stakes. Mr E. Cutts's eh m Peeresß, syrs lOat 41b (M'Glashan) 1 Mi> Taylor's b g Gamester, aged, 7st6lb (Morgan) 2 Mr Hughes's bk m XXX, aged, 7stlOlb(Blyth) 3 It is almost needless to say that tins was the great race of the meeting, and consequently all interest was centered in it. At tho fall of the flag, XXX jumped away with the lead, followed by Gamester, Peeress a length or two • behind. Passing the judge for the first time XXX led by a neck, Gamester being followed by Peeress. In going round for the Becond time, Gamester, at passing the Stand, had forged slightly ahead, Peeress still being in the rear, about a couple of lengths. In rounding the first turn for the third time, XXX lost considerable ground which she never recovered during tho race. On coming to the straight for the third time XXX perceptibly dropped off, and on passing the judge, Gbmester led by a length, Peeress fob lowing, hard held ; XXX four lengths behind. This position was hold between the chestnut mare and Gamester (XXX still dropping off) until within sixty yardys of the judge, when Morgan .used the whip ; but, without any effort, upon the slack of the rein being given her, the mare landed winner by half a length. The excitement was intense during the running of the last two hundred yards, aud on passing the judge, Peeress and her jockey were greeted with cheers. Tho cool and clever riding of M'Glashan, showed that he was thoroughly master of his borse, and knew to an inch her capabilities. SEiit-nra Stakes, of 20 sovs. Weight for age. One mile and a quarter. Mr Hughes's blk m XXX, £SO (M'Glashan) 1 Mr Campbell's Eobin Hood, £2O (Morgan) ... ... ... 2 Mr James Steele's gr m Ino £2O (Jones) 3
Betting.—XXX against the field This was without doubt, tho best contested race of the day; M'Glashan again landing his horse a winner, after a hard race, by a neck. Ladies' Pukse, of 20 sovs. Gentlemen riders. Welter weight for age. One mile and a half. Mr W. Tavlor's Gamester, aged, 12st 41b, (Spiller) 1 Mr Seaton's b g Supple Jack, syrs, list 91 bs, (M'Kay) 2 Mr Crogan's gr g Orlando, aged, 12st 41b, (Carroll) 3 Betting. Cramester against the field.
The race lay between Gamester and Supple Jack; won by a length, and was closely contested throughout. Alter the Ladies' Purse a private match for a side came off between Ino and Kobiu Hood, the former carrying 9sr, the latter list. Going round the secoud time Robin, Hood ran off the course and was unable to regaiu his ground. Ino therefore won easily. The mare was ridden by Johnny M'Glashan, and Eobin Hood by Blyth. The Consolation Stakes wound up the '7l races for Greymouth.
