The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. In the cause of Truth and Justice we strive. THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 1871.

The petitions forwarded to the Post-master-General, for the appointment oi'arnail service between Westport and the Upper Bulier, have so far resulted favorably, that there appears to be a likelihood of postal communication being established between Westport and the lnangahua. Though the public will not. fail to appreciate this early attention to their wants, ' yet they will naturally perceive with regret that a scheme has not been proposed better calculated to secure at an equal cost the largesl benefit. As will be seen, the Government have decided that the mails shall bo carried by horse, and tenders are required for the performance of a weekly and a fortnightly service between Westport and lieefton, the latter being the centre of a populous district, and consequently the most convenient terminus that couldr" be adopted. The advantages gained by the miners at Murray, Boatman, and Anderson's Creeks will not be equally participated in by a population not greatly iuferior in point of numbers, resident on the right bank of the Bulier, at the Lyell, and at the junction of the Bulier and rivers.. Yet a plan might have been devised, not much more costly to main-, tain, by which the requirements of the whole district would have been equally met without prejudice to the interests of the large population of the Upper lnangahua. The establishment of a main service between Westport and the lnangahua Junction with branch services to Keefton and the Lyell, and a post-office at Christy's, would more effectually meet the wishes and requirements of the upriver population. Another oversight, due possibly to the ignorance of the authorities in Wellington upon our means of communication, is to insist that the mails shall be carried by horse. It would have been preferablo that the contractor had been permitted to convey the mails in any manner calculated- to insure their speedy and safe delivery.
