SOCIAL LIFE IN PARIS.

People often ask, who leads the fashion now that Paris is besieged ? Tho Queen of England certainly does not ; tho quiet, religious, matronly Augusta of Prussia never did ; the Russian Court is very grand, but except in furs, no lady would ever think of perusing a St. Petersburg La Follet. In tho matter of fashions every one must worship under his own vine and fi<j;-troe. The position of Paris suggests .sirange thoughts about the dressmakers, who must be very hard-up ; in fact social life in the fashionable city has undergone a revolution much greater than the political. Here is an instance:—Tho other d:ty, iu Paris, a lady returned from a promenade at diuner time to her hou.-e. •bo went into the kitchen to see if everything was all right there. and, as the inspection did not have the wished-for result, she sent Justine her servant girl to buy some more provisions. Suddenly the door-bell was rung, and when the lady opened the door a man rushed in, and menacingly brandished a knife, uttering the words, " Your plate or your life!" Perfectly dumbfounded, the frightened lady' pointed to a large clothes-press standing in the kitchen. Perhaps her intention was only to gain time, for the plate was not there at all. The robber hastened to tin- clothes-press and opened it ; but to his terror, and to the great suprise of the lady, there stepped from it a tall grenadier, who disarmed the robber and took him to tho station-house, previously saying to the lady, " Excuse me, madame—l was waiting here for Justine."
