Tho steamer Charles Edward arrived in port on Thursday evening, at 10 o'clock. She left Nelson on Wednesday, at 8 p.m, Called at Motueka, leaving there at 11 p.m. Experienced fine weather and smooth passage down, arriving off the bar at 6 p.m. next day. She brings a full cargo, of which over 35 tons are for this port. The Charles Edward sailed for Greymouth and Hokitika about midnight yesterday. An advertisement in the Wellington papers announces that the steamers Wellington, .Ahnriri, Phoebe, and Taranaki are to h<' srM ■by public auction on the 18th of April, u;ixu» privately disposed of before the 3rd of that mouth. Great fears are entertained for the sifety of the ship City of Adelaide, bound to Sydney from London, and now 170 days out. The underwriters have given her up as lost. Mr Sohier, of wax-works celebrity, and his wife , *re said to have been passengers by that vessel. The s.s. Alhambra was expected to leave Melbourne with strict punctuality, as the Omeo had been temporarily withdrawn from <he New Zealand trade. The former boat was expected to arrive at Hokitika yesterday. (Her arrival is announced by telegraph since the above was in type.) The s.s. Wallabi, having been detained in Greymouth through a deficiency in ihe supply of conl, left for Wanganui on Wednesday. Tom Day, the well-known pul'er, formerly of Melbourne, las been killed at Sydney, by accidentally falling down the hold of the ship Sobrnon. A telegram from Sydney, dated February 9, says : —" The boiler of the steamer Hunter, on her passage south, burst, and severely scalded the engh eer," Th" barque MnJ.iy has made a poo 1 passage of thirty-eight clays from Mauritius to Nelson, with a cargo of sugar. We (" Nelson Examiner") 1 am from Captain l'eters thr.t the crop lust year is a short cue, and that there will be -io.iOO tons less than in (he average of seasons. The schooner Mavis, after having undergone an overhaul at Lyttelton, was launched from Messrs Flett and Louttefe's slip on the 2nd inst. She will probably load for one of the West Coast ports. 1 he cutter Woodqucst recently arrived at Auckland with machinery from the wreck of the s.s. Aiiedale. The clipper ship Thermopylae has again arrived in the Colonies from England, after a magnificent passage variously stated lit 57 and 59 days. The calculation of the captain of the Tanrua is 57 days, which, even with a latitude of two or three days, would be the fastest sailing passage to the colonies on record. She is reported as having left England on December 29th. Her former voyage to Melbourne and round to China, and from thence to London, was chronicled as one of the fastest voyages which had hitherto been accomplished. It will be interesting to learn the dotailed particulars of her present trip to Melbourne, as her average sailing must, if accomplished in the time, have exceeded 250 miles per diem.
