(FROM OUR OW.V COIUtESPOXDKNT.) Napieb, Feb. 20. A fire occurred in Shakespeare road this morning, at 4 a.m., which destroyed seven houses. Nearly ail the goods were saved. The cause of the lire is unknown, but it is expected that very suspicious circumstances will transpire at the inquest. The buildings were insured for £6OO. Bunedin, Feb. 20. It is almost certain that Mr Macandrew has been returned for the Superintendency of Otago. The numbers now are—Macandrew, 2000; Reid, 1419. Other returns are to come in, but they are not likely to alter the result. Napieh, Feb. 17. The following is the result of yesterday's races : Provincial Produce, 30 sovs : Hikutoto, 1 ; Express, 2. Free Handicap, 40 sovs : Yatterina 1, Nebula 2. Optional Selling Stakes, 30 sovs: Slander 1, Bretwalder 2. Consolation Handicap, 30 sovs: Bretwalder 1, Titokowaru 2. Auckland, Feb. 16. Carleton has been defeated by M'Lend in the Bay of Islands district by G4 votes. in the Rodiey election Farnell polled 190 votes, and' Shepherd 115. The s.s. Aired.de was insured with the Southern Insurance Company for the amount for which she was purchased.
There is considerable excitement in th 3 share market, in consequence of the rich yield in the Caledonian claim. Thames, Feb. 16.
There is great excitement in the share market to-day, in consequence of the crushing of two tons of rich specimens from the Caledonian claim. Shares in that claim are selling at <£GO. The Thames Mining Company's shares are selling at £l2, and there is brisk enquiry for shares in the Waitemata, Belfast. Inverness, Tookey, and All Nations claims.
The result of the East election is— Kelly, 138 ; M'Kay, 64; Skeet, 52. Te Kooti is reported to have fled into the Waikato district.
