The subjoined, from LordPaltnerston's diary, anent the Prussian defeat at Jena, is singularly apposite to present events : "After such a signal overthrow, it is natural to endeavour to find out reasons in the treachery or incapacity of the officers concerned, and it often happens that much injustice is in this manner clone to men whose only fault has been a want of success."
